It’s only been a few months, and there is already new content for the Disney Villainous board game; it’s called Disney Villainous: Evil Comes Prepared. Like its predecessor, Wicked to the Core, it is a standalone board game as well as the second expansion to the core board game (it works with the second expansion as well).

One of the great things about Disney Villainous is that every villain has his/her own powers, goals, and rules (in addition to the base rules) that makes every game a little bit different every time it is played. Evil Comes Prepared adds 3 new Disney villains to the mix: Yzma (“The Emperor’s New Groove”), Scar (“The Lion King”), and Ratigan (“The Great Mouse Detective”).

Inside the Box

Opened Box

The box itself is the same size as the previous expansion box, approximately 2/3 the size of the core game box. The contents can fit within the core game box, so I disposed of the plastic tray insert, and I kept the box. These boxes are too beautiful to throw away, and I like to keep them around as storage solutions for miscellaneous game items. With the next expansion set, I will no longer be able to hold all of the game components inside of the core game box, so these extra expansion boxes will come in handy.

Inside the box is everything needed to play the game: player boards, villain cards, fate cards, player pawns, power tokens, villain guides, reference cards, and an instruction book. The only thing missing is the cauldron which comes only with the core game. A bowl or two is really all that is needed if you absolutely want to use a container for the power tokens.

Villain Tokens & Reference Sheets

The player pawns are still beautiful abstract crystal art sculptures that represent each villain. The plastic is soft and flexible, resistant to breakage, and they have some heft to them that feels nice. The Yzma pawn is very thin and flexible, so watch out for kids who like to use her as a bendable fidget toy.

Yzma's Cards

Scar's Cards

Ratigan's Cards

The cards still feature drop-dead gorgeous artwork. I recently discovered that the images are primarily stills taken from the animated films, but artists were hired to recreate them in a more painterly style. That was a smart choice; film stills wouldn’t have the same aesthetic.

Ratigan's Alternate Objective

Ratigan has a unique cardboard piece that changes his objective (and artwork) depending on certain circumstances. Yzma’s Fate deck is divided into 4 different piles, making it a challenge to find Kuzco. And, Scar has to build up a succession pile, a stack of defeated heroes, to become king.

Tokens & Reference Sheets

The reference cards are the same on the front as the reference cards from the core game. But, the backsides have the summarized goals of the new villains as well as tips for defeating them.

Custom Storage

Deck identification Stickers

With Evil Comes Prepared, my custom card divider is now filled. I also designed stickers/labels to go onto the side of the divider so that I could easily identify each deck. I’ll have to redo the divider using black card stock for a better aesthetic.

You can now download the deck organizer (complete with stickers & labels) and build one for yourself!

Box Contents

Everything fits inside the remaining space except for the cauldron, which I’m storing in the Wicked to the Core box. Note that the single die in the photo is not included in the game. That is something that I began adding to my board games to quell any arguments about who gets to take the first turn.

Since my review of the original Disney Villainous board game, my nephews and I have played many games, and the expansion sets have infused new life and excitement into the core game. I’ve yet to play every character, so I’m still discovering new and exciting twists on the gameplay.

Which Version Should Newcomers Buy?

Since Disney Villainous: Evil Comes Prepared is a standalone board game (2-3 players) in addition to an expansion of both the core Villainous board game (2-6 players) and Wicked to the Core (2-3 players), which version should newcomers buy?

If you’re a Disney villain fan and a board game geek, I still say you should go for the core game. You’ll have twice the villains to choose from, which is great for replayability, and you can have more players in a single game. You also get the nifty cauldron to hold your power tokens. Comparing online and in-store prices, the core game costs roughly $5-7 more than the expansion, and you’re getting more than twice the content.

If you’re only curious about the game, either expansion set will give you a taste of the gameplay. When you tire of playing the three villains, either graduate to the core set or purchase the other expansion.

Personally, I say buy all of them!

How Many Players Are Too Many?

Try out our own set of solo play rules!

Combining every edition of Disney Villainous (to date) means that there can be up to 12 players playing across multiple games (the game specifically states no more than 6 players per game). I recommend that players be broken into groups of 3-6 players. I personally wouldn’t go more than 4 players, although I’ve never played a 5-6 player game. Three to four players just feels right as there is a lot that you have to pay attention to.

With these small groups, players can have a tournament. Who can play the best and rise above all other Disney villains!?

Verdict

Disney Villainous: Evil Comes Prepared is a must-buy whether you own the core game, the first expansion, or nothing at all. It’s fun, it’s beautiful, and the tight integration of both gameplay and mechanics with the villains’ storylines will make you fall in love with the game.

Do you have a way to customize the labels? I would like to mimic the labels as I have a tuck box to store my extra power tokens and would like to label it and have the label match all of the other labels.

    • Trader Sam:

No, sadly. I may add some blank labels, but you’d have to find a way to add your own text in. That usually requires some Photoshop or Illustrator skills.

    • Trader Sam:

I’ve been looking into making the labels fillable, and it might be possible. I need to look into it further.

    • Trader Sam:

Ben, check out the new customizable labels!

How can we know when the template for the insert is posted? I really like this insert more than the other ones I have seen online and would love to make one!

    • Trader Sam:

Keep an eye on the News Blog. I will also add notes to all Disney Villainous posts.

      It’s coming.

Love those custom stickers for the side of the box! Have you updated for the latest Villainous addon yet?
I’m starting the process of pimping my basegame in prep for getting the addons and would really like to do something similar, so would be interested to know if you still have a template for this 🙂

    • Trader Sam:

Yes, it’s all there in the photos. I had to start a new deck divider for Pete, Cruella, and Mother Gothel.

I do have templates, but they’re a bit large. They may not print, which is why I haven’t released them. I’ll look into it a bit further, though.

    • Trader Sam:

Oh, sorry. Read the latest Disney Villainous post for the latest images.

    • Trader Sam:

Good news! The deck organizer can be printed. I originally designed it for myself to only be cut out by machine, so I had to rearrange some things and make it all look polished.

I already have the parts completed; now, I just have to create the illustrated instructions. Look for the files soon!
