Well only a nut like me would think of making a tiny skyway! : )
Today I did the next step in my experiments with expanding polyeurethane foam. It comes in a spray can and is very easy to work with. This is the Big Thunder Mountain display btw.
What I did was build up a rudimentary foamcore skeleton around a cheap model railroad tunnel and a small western town. I added dowell rods to give me something solid to build peaks and buttes on. One can did a fairly good job of creating basic rock shapes that I can carve and paint. However the spray foam didn’t go as far as I’d hoped nor did it stick very well to the vertical dowells. I had to put a blob at the base of each dowell and wait for it to expand a bit before I could move upward. I’ll also have to fill in the larger gaps with balls of newspaper and cover them with paper since the foam would be too hard to use in those areas. But all in all I’m happy with the results.
For the Matterhorn, I’d like to start with a cheap styrofoam tunnel like I did for BTM but I haven’t found one yet. My plans call for the Matterhorn to be on a back curve in the track and curved tunnels are harder to find and usually more expensive. (At least in as far as what I want to do with them is concerned!) Anyhoo, I’ll build up the mountain with foamcore, newspaper and masking tape then cover the entire thing with a thin layer of spray foam which can be carved and painted. I’ll send pics when I get it under way.
I also spent a good portion of yesterday creating mods for the Skyway Buckets. The mod will include parts for turquoise, blue, red, and yellow buckets. I still have to get them PDF-ready.
Yep, I’ve been pretty busy! I have to get all of Disneyland built by the end of September and I only decided to do this insanity at the end of June! Turns out the second cousin I built the Haunted Mansion Game for likes trains, so I’m expecting them to see this come Christmas! : ) His sister got the castle dollhouse that year btw so I’m sure she’ll like it too!
This week I’m working on the Wicked Wench which will double for the Jolly Roger, building up Big Thunder Mountain using spray foam and motorizing the rides from my Polly Pocket set.
Put the Skyway on wires and run it around through the Christmas tree?!?!??? What are you on?!?!? lol Seriously though, if you’d consider sending me some color variations on those gondolas I’d make more than 2! : ) Right now my options are yellow or white if I assemble it inside out! lol
But seriously what I’m planning is to have just 2 gondolas hanging on steel cable inside the ice grottos of the Matterhorn. Oh yeah, I have to build the Matterhorn of course! You wouldn’t happen to have any bobsled models lying around we don’t know about do you??? ; )
I never thought about doing multiple color designs for the Skyway buckets. It’d be a simple enough thing to do. I just need to do some research. Good idea!
I don’t have any bobsleds lying around. I would if I could ever tackle the Matterhorn itself (one day).
Sweet! Looks like my Skyway will expand very soon!

I’ve worked with expanding foam before. Not fun.

Whoa. ‘Busy’ is an understatement.
